Apprenticeship Program

Here at K-9 Protection Services, we offer an extensive apprenticeship program. In the program you learn all the ins and outs of dog training and handling. Unlike many other schools, we offer a balanced mixture of classroom and hands on experience. You are provided with all necessary equipment including uniforms, collars, leashes, and even your own K9 partner! You will learn how to properly manage a kennel, how to properly read a dog, work with obedience clients, how to fix behavioral issues, how to do protection training, and even bomb and narcotics detection. In addition to all this, you become part of the close knit K-9 [Protection] Services family. It takes a lot of determination to become a dog trainer, but if you are up for the challenge, contact John Williams at 757-855-2900.

For young adults and teens we offer our Youth Program. Click Here for more information.

"I have been with K-9 [Protection] Services for almost 2 months now. I came here with a little bit of knowledge about training dogs because of my mother, but since I have been assigned to Hannibal a Malinois who has taught and shown me I still have much to learn. Thankfully John Williams, owner of K-9 [Protection] Services, has been taking the time to instruct me in proper dog handling and training techniques. So has his protégé Jordan Ballard. Both of which are amazing dog handlers who can get dogs to do things I thought where not possible. The detection and protection work I've seen them do is memorizing and I one day will be doing it with Hannibal."

"I have had a short but eventful experience here at K-9 [Protection] Services. The main thing I have learned is to have confidence in everything you do. I feel like working with dogs has made me a stronger, yet more understanding person. I look forward to all the knowledge and experience I have yet to gain. Also, I am glad to be working with Bo' Herra. She is a lot like me in that she is very smart and very stubborn. At times she is difficult to handle but that is all part of the learning process. I was very lucky to receive a dog as brilliant as her. I am excited to see what the future has in store for us."

"K-9 [Protection] Services' apprenticeship program had given my white GSD Khya knowledge in the K-9/handler working relationship. We started here 7/25/2012 and already she has progressed well through learning the first parts of detection, bite work, as well as running the obstacle course. Just today Khya was introduced to the "A" frame and handled it like a champ! It's a neat experience to be able to bring in my own dog and transform her from a pet into a working dog. I'm very excited for all of the unique experiences yet to come."

"The apprentice program is a great learning experience for me. I am so happy to be in this program because of the knowledge that I have gained. I am truly thankful to have this opportunity to become a certified Dog Handler and to be able to bond with my dog this way. There is so much to learn in this program and I am excited to get to the point where I can say that I am an expert."
